After building several niche sites I quickly found out what niches to avoid to ensure the best possible passive income results. After having many problems coming up with niche ideas I went to the old saying “write about something you know or like”. So I kind of went this route and decided to look into keywords related to the electronics industry. The two niches I chose were around headphones and different types of chargers.
After doing my keyword research with Market Samurai I found both of these niches to be quite popular without a huge amount of competition.
So I purchased my domain names and build my wordpress sites and began creating content. This is when I began to realize I may have made a mistake choosing these niches.
After creating reviews on a bunch of products which I mainly outsourced through oDesk and Textbroker, I found I had nothing more to offer on these niches. Other than reviews I could not think of anything more to write about. Plus when it came down to driving traffic to my site I had a difficult time using my normal techniques.
I usually write articles that link to my site but in this case I could really only write product reviews which looked like duplicate content. Plus if someone read my article, they would click on a link to my site and find almost the exact same content just reworded.
Creating videos on Youtube is also another traffic method I use which was tough to do in this case. I basically created a Power Point, added some graphics and recorded myself reading the product reviews. If I actually had all of the physical products I would have been able to create a much more informative and helpful video.
My suggestion is that you stay away from technology niche sites that deal with gadgets, computers and phones. These items are over covered by sites like Engadget, CNET, Tech Crunch, Gizmodo and a million other blogs. People will go to these place first to get reviews before purchasing a products.
Even after saying all this I was able to rank very well for both these niches sites and did make money with Amazon affiliate links. I just think there is a better way to do this without constantly needing to update your site with reviews on the latest products.
Even if you do find great keywords with little competition ensure they are in a niche you can sustain.
I personally think the perfect niche is something that does not have physical products, more of an information based niche like losing weight, curing acne, how to avoid panic attacks. These are also areas where you can create massive amounts of content that will always be relevant and useful.
These types of niches are also very good candidates for advertising since Google, Kontera, Chitka will be able to post very relevant ads that are likely to be clicked.
Even though this type of niche may be harder to find it will pay off in the long run.
